Watercolor and ink drawing of a woman performing the pas de zephir. Appearing in dance manuals from around the turn of the 19th century, the pas de zephir involved a rising motion from the floor that gave the impression of flight. Witnessing French dancer Auguste Vestris’ performance of the movement, a skeptical critic asked: “Where will dance go from here? Maybe one will be able to stop in mid air.” (Source: Rijksmuseum)
